Is Chatbot Arena (LMArena) still meaningful?
Status:Contested Checked against the report, 5 November 2026
Verdict
Partly. It still shows crowd preference, but private testing and unequal data access distort the ranking.
Why contested: "The Leaderboard Illusion" found that Meta tested 27 private variants before the Llama 4 release.[1][1] The Leaderboard Illusion (Singh et al.) Primary Google and OpenAI received an estimated 19.2% and 20.4% of all Arena data.[1][1] The Leaderboard Illusion (Singh et al.) Primary
